Practical guidesCouples and families can speak with a counsellor about relationship difficulties and conflict. Swedish law requires municipalities to offer family counselling to people who request it. Search your municipality’s familjerådgivning service to book.
Practical guidesA ramp, grab rail or other fixed change may make everyday life possible at home. Ask your municipality about bostadsanpassningsbidrag. It is for adapting a permanent home because of a disability; an expert certificate may be needed.
Practical guidesLooking to practise Swedish or get help with digital services? Check what your local library runs. Libraries may offer language cafés, classes, digital help, newspapers, databases and study spaces. The mix depends on the municipality.
Banks & BankIDSeveral major Swedish banks let customers set up Mobilt BankID on a new phone remotely when the old BankID still works. Nordea is our tested example; Swedbank, SEB and Handelsbanken publish similar flows.
Practical guidesWondering who has checked your credit? Ask the credit bureau what information it keeps about you. Contact the credit bureau directly to request access to your personal data. IMY says access is generally free, unless a request is manifestly unfounded or excessive.
SafetyA contact ban (kontaktförbud) may be imposed when there is a risk that someone will commit a crime against you, stalk you or seriously harass you. A ban is not automatic after an application; the prosecutor assesses the risk and circumstances. An appeal is reviewed by the district court.
RightsIn Sweden, a victim’s legal counsel is called a målsägandebiträde. The counsel is often an advocate, but other qualified lawyers can also be appointed. A målsägandebiträde is not appointed automatically in every case; the court assesses the circumstances of the individual case.
EducationThe three-year period runs from the date you were first admitted to SFI, not from the number of months you actually attended. The clock does not automatically stop because you were not attending for part of the period. The first admission date matters.
ПравоPolice or prosecutor decide whether to open a criminal investigation. Not every report leads to a criminal investigation, and not every investigation reaches court. Sufficient evidence is required.
RightsIf you disagree with a Försäkringskassan decision, you can request an omprövning — a formal reconsideration. Do not submit only “I disagree”. A stronger request identifies a specific error and provides evidence that can change the assessment.
InsuranceHome insurance can compensate personal belongings for many types of theft and damage, subject to policy terms. Exact cover and exclusions depend on the insurer and policy. Do not assume home insurance covers everything.
WorkKronofogden states that an employee can apply for a payment order to establish an unpaid salary claim. Do not sign documents stating that salary was paid or that you waive claims unless you understand the consequences.
WorkThe new income-based system took effect on 1 October 2025 for new decisions under the new rules. The old and new systems can still apply to different cases. Do not assume figures from an older claim apply to a new one.
Municipal supportApplications are made to social services in your municipality. This is means-tested last-resort support: available income, assets and other benefits normally come first, and the whole household is assessed.
SavingsMatmissionen operates in the Stockholm region, with stores including Handen, Kista, Rågsved and Södertälje. This is a Stockholms Stadsmission service, not a nationwide government benefit. Income criteria can change.
Benefits & supportHousing allowance mainly targets families with children and low-income people under 29. The calculator is only an estimate. Försäkringskassan makes the final decision and later income reconciliation can lead to an extra payment or repayment.
HousingStockholm’s housing agency, Bostadsförmedlingen, has a “Short queue time” (Kort kötid) filter for homes where a shorter wait may be enough. Short queue time does not guarantee a contract; you still need to meet the landlord’s eligibility criteria.
