New phone? How to set up BankID without visiting a bank branch

Video guide

Several major Swedish banks let customers set up Mobilt BankID on a new phone remotely when the old BankID still works. Nordea is our tested example; Swedbank, SEB and Handelsbanken publish similar flows.

Key point: changing phones in Sweden does not always mean visiting a bank branch to get Mobilt BankID on the new device. If the old BankID is still valid, several major banks support a remote process.

Nordea is only our tested example. Swedbank, SEB and Handelsbanken also publish remote new-phone instructions. Exact steps vary by bank.

Typical pattern

  1. Keep the old BankID and old phone intact.
  2. Install BankID on the new phone.
  3. Start from the old phone or internet bank, depending on your bank.
  4. Identify or approve with the existing BankID.
  5. Use the bank's new-device flow, often with QR and Bluetooth proximity checks.
  6. Finish activation on the new phone.
  7. Test BankID, your banking app and Swish before erasing the old phone.

Bank examples

Nordea: start in the old Nordea app under Profile → Hantera BankID. This is the route we tested ourselves.

Swedbank: the bank describes ordering a new Mobilt BankID using the old phone, choosing another device and scanning a QR code on the new phone.

SEB: SEB supports a new-device/move flow using the existing Mobilt BankID and requires Bluetooth on both devices for the move process.

Handelsbanken: customers aged 16+ can order a new Mobilt BankID for another device from the app on the old phone and complete the process by QR.

If the old BankID no longer works

The process changes. Depending on the bank, you may need an ID document, personal code, security device, customer support or in some cases a branch visit.

Bottom line

Before wiping the old phone, check your bank's current new-phone instructions. If the old BankID still works, there is often a fully remote route.
