Register extract in Sweden: what it is and how to get it digitally

Registerutdrag is an extract from Polisen's registers that an employer may ask you to show for certain kinds of work.

In short: do not order a random extract “just in case”. Ask the employer which type is required. Many employment-related extracts can be delivered digitally, but there are exceptions.

What is it?

The criminal records register contains information about criminal sanctions. Some special checks can also include limited information from the suspects register.

Who may need it?

Special rules apply, for example, to work in schools, LSS, HVB, activities involving children, insurance distribution and certain work with elderly people or people with disabilities.

How to get it digitally

  1. Ask which extract the employer needs.
  2. Apply through Polisen.
  3. Choose digital delivery when available.
  4. Have a digital mailbox such as Kivra, Billo or Min myndighetspost.
  5. Wait for processing.
Having Kivra does not automatically make the delivery digital.

Processing time

Digital delivery removes postal time but does not make processing instant. Polisen states that processing can take up to two weeks.

School work in 2026

From 15 July 2026, the rules for the relevant school-sector extract changed, including broader checks and a validity period of six months.
